Craik-Cornsweet

The Craik-Cornsweet Illusion is a classic that is easily understood in terms of retinal receptive fields.  See the illusion here.

Looking below at the input notice that just edges are presented.  However, compare the output to the output for the white bar.  It is very similar - if I played with it more I might get it closer.  If the output from the eye is the same or nearly the same for the two inputs they ought to lead to the same or very similar perception.  Thus, even though edges are only input, this pattern of output predicts that a white bar ought to be perceived.  That is what is perceived as you see from the link above.
